6 Active Listening Skills
Greetings. It's Dr. Debbie, and today my topic is on active listening. If you know my personality, you know I love to recommend books, and this one is excellent. It's entitled, "Listen Like You Mean It." And today, I wanna share six active listening skills. Uh, this is the work that comes from the Center for Creative Leadership.
If there's any important skill in leadership, it is the skill of active listening. So, the first part is to pay attention. You've gotta lock in, eye contact, uh, minimize those distractions. The second part is to withhold judgment. You don't have to be Judge James or Judge Judy, just take in the information without having an opinion.
The third is to reflect on what you've heard. Listen and think about how does this relate to what you're doing? So, reflecting on that. Number four is to clarify. Clarify what you've heard. And then number five is to summarize. One, two, three, A, B, C. Make sure that you understand exactly what you've heard and summarize that back to your, the person you're talking to.
And then number six is to share that information. You might, uh, get important information from a resident that you wanna share in the team huddle. You might, uh, get important information from a subcontractor that's out on your property, and you need to share it with leadership. I always like to say, "When you care, you share."
And so I hope you can share these six active listening skills with a team member, because at the end of the day, it's about being more effective and just having, um, more enjoyment and engagement in our work. So again, let's get after those active listening skills, and remember, when you care, you share. I look forward to seeing you in the next video.
Keep listening.
