How To Replace A Tub Drain
All right. We're gonna be replacing a tub drain today. Uh, as you can see, this one is broken. Uh, but also, I see this all the time where people put the washer in the wrong spot. This black ring does not go here. But let's get into this and I'll show you exactly where it goes. First, we're gonna take our drain tool, and it fits right in here, and then I've got a ratchet that fits right in the top, and then we're gonna spin
Fin the strain
Once we get to a point where it's loose enough, you can use your hand to take it out the rest of the way
See, that was broken. But let's talk about where this washer's supposed to go
You can see the tub here, and then you see that drain valve, or the, the drain housing right here. If I push down in here, there's a little bit of movement between the tub and this drain, this, uh, tailpiece here. That washer actually goes under the tub and on top of this shoe, this tub shoe right here. So I'm gonna get this cleaned up, get the shoe in the...
or get the seal washer in the right spot, and then I'll show you what that looks like.
Now let's put the new one in, and it goes right here in this gap. Right here
Just like that. See? The new washer is between the tub and the tub shoe where the drain goes. Now, let's put in the new drain
Got some plumber's putty. Plumber's putty. And I'm going to roll out in my hands, and I'm going to make like a
Snake. This is the new dream. So we're gonna put this around the edge
Doesn't matter how much you use, whatever's left will come out, so don't be too stingy with how much you put on here. Uh, so I coat it pretty good because when I start to tighten this down, any excess is gonna come out and I'll be able to put it back in the bucket, use it again later. So don't be stingy.
The biggest thing with this when installing- These tub drains excuse me, is you wanna make sure that you're not cross-threading anything. So before you really start to ratchet this down, make sure
That you're actually getting into that shoe the right way, 'cause you really don't wanna start cross-threading these things. You can hand-tighten it as much as you can, then put your tool back in. Using my hand to get that nice and tight. You can kinda see the putty coming out now
So I've got that about as tight as I can twist it. So I'll grab the ratchet real quick
And then I'll give it A couple hard turns
I'll clean up this putty. Came out
Screw in the new stopper. This is one of those toe trips
So you push it, and that seals it. And that releases it And that's how you ta- change a tub stopper drain
