Know Your Whys

As a supervisor, you’ll need to explain and defend your decisions with data. Be ready to answer: Where did that info come from? What’s the calculation or reasoning behind it? Get comfortable with backing up your recommendations, and tailor your communication style to your audience. Some want details, others just need a yes or no. Learn to adjust accordingly.

 Now that you're a supervisor, you will need to be able to explain your decision and defend it based on calculations and data. So one of the things you'll hear often as a supervisor when you make a recommendation to someone in the office manager corporate office is where did you get that information?

What data do you have to support it, and how did you decide or calculate. And come to that conclusion. And so those are questions that you just have to get accustomed to. Sometimes when you work with someone, they may ask questions and it may be a long list, and all they want is a yes and no, and not a long explanation.

So try to figure out the best way that people want you to communicate with them when you're communicating about data and decision making and calculations and judgements in the field.
