How to Test a Capacitor Fast & Accurate

Need to test a capacitor? Here’s a quick walkthrough: read the label, set your multimeter to microfarads (MFD or µF), and check both the compressor (HERM) and fan terminals. If readings are outside the ±5% tolerance, it’s time to replace.

Very quickly, how do I test a capacitor? Number one, read the label. I know simple, but it says 40 micro ferrets and then five. So two terminals should have 40 micro ferrets, two terminals should have five. Take your multimeter

until you see micro PHAs, which will say MFD or a little U and F, which means micro PHAs. The U means micro one goes uncommon. One goes on hermetic. So this are the two compressor terminals. It says 39, it's supposed to be 40, it's perfect, plus or minus 5%. This goes to fan, and that should be five. So this is 4.4.

So for me, that's a little close. Most technicians, I think would probably put it on, but I would get a new capacitor and sometimes they're close to the tolerance. 4.4 is pretty close, but I would rather have one that is, uh, closer to the five micro ferres. So this, this one I would replace.
