Work Life Balance
Thing Number three. Three, uh, work life balance. Again, I know what I'm signing up for when I take the job of a maintenance worker at a property, but again, that doesn't mean that it doesn't take a toll. So on that lack of work-life balance, you have on call duties. Multifamily maintenance workers are often required to be on call for emergencies, which disrupts their personal time and their sleep schedules.
It wakes you up. It wakes your wife up, your spouse up, your husband up. It wakes up your kids. It wakes everybody up, and so it's not just you who's inconvenience, it's your family, your pets, right. So E, even if you didn't have to leave your house, even if I didn't have to leave my house because it was a false alarm, resident called and said, Hey, you know, my toilet's clogged.
And I'm like, well, you are in a two bedroom apartment. You have another bathroom. I'll get to that in the morning. I'm still awake. I was still woken up, I was still disrupted. So now you have to go back to the process of getting yourself back into bed. The on-call thing is a challenge that a lot of companies wish they could solve.
Um, will they ever, I don't know. So also for the lack of work-life balance, you also have, um, there are like peak seasons when it's summertime. They see when it's winter time, heat, um, but certain times of the year, such as leasing season or extreme weather may, may demand long hours and overtime leaving little time for personal life.
So depending on what side of the multifamily housing, uh, like what side of it you're on, if you're on, um, college properties. Obviously there's a huge leasing move in season and it is very demanding for a period of time. You have to turn, you know, 600, 400, 200 apartments in a week. Um, yes, that exists for those of us who've never heard of it.
Uh, it's quite intense and some of those things demand long hours, so. It's not just the people who work in college or dormitory housing, that sort of thing. Um, some of us have our leases and at the end of the month, and so the first couple weeks of every month are busy with turnovers. 'cause you have to have ready apartments in order to get people to move in.
So could demand. Long hours could demand, um, somebody to sacrifice their work-life balance to get their work done. Again, I agree to it when I take the job, however, doesn't mean it doesn't affect me.
