Why Do Plumbing Drains Have Vents

Ever wonder what those pipes on the roof are for? This video explains plumbing vent stacks and why they’re essential for proper drainage. Learn how vents release sewer gases and balance air pressure to prevent gurgling, slow drains, and backups—plus a simple demonstration that makes it easy to understand.

In life. There are a lot of questions, but I'm willing to bet you have asked this question before. What are those pipes coming out of the roof? Well, those pipes are what's called ventilation pipes. In a plumbing system, it's very important for water to flow correctly without air pockets or restrictions.

But there are two key reasons why we should vent our pipes. One is for sewer gases, and two, it's for atmospheric pressures. That's why we have to ventilate our pipes. Look. Look, I hear you, but what do you mean it has to be vented? I need an example. I guess it's time for an experiment.

So when it comes to your plumbing, at the very top of that pipe, let's pretend there was a cat, just like how this water bottle is totally sealed off. So if our plumbing stack had no way to vent air, let's watch this bottle real quick. Notice the gurgling air pockets are trapped. If we were to introduce just a little bit of venting,
