Re-Key a Lock Without the Original Key
Hey everyone. Mark Sharp here. Maintenance supervisor at Willowbrook Apartments in Malden. I wanted to kinda show you guys a really cool trick. I learned a thousand years ago regarding a keyed. Entry lock. This partic, this specific lock I do not have a key for.
I can't, or you would think maybe that this would be bad. 'cause if you have no key you can't re-key it. Couldn't use it. So I think a lot of people may throw these away when there's actually a very simple way to get the cylinders out and how to re-keyed. Rekey a keyed entry lock.
So right now you can see that the, it is unlocked, it's in the unlocked position. So you can see here, this is your pin. This thing moves. See if I can get this right. Just a little pin here, you can see it slides and now it's in the locked position. So when you do this, you want to put it in a neutral position.
And I've got this little tool here. It comes with a lot of of your quick set locks. This is the only thing you'll need to replace this or to rekey the lock. But anyway, what you wanna do is you want to get this pin, this little latch here in a neutral position. So you don't want it to be locked or unlocked, you just want it to be somewhere in the middle.
And then right here. I'm trying to do this backwards. There is a pen, so if you look right here, you'll see a pen moving back and forth. You see that? So what you're gonna do is you are going to push that in. So that pin, it comes out like that,
trying to do this
and then grab some needle nose pliers and then this
comes out. Okay. And so then what you want to do. With the pin out. Now you can see right, in here, there's a nice little hole and you can see part of the retaining clips here. You want to take this tool, this end down, and you want to force that little gateway open, and then this tool slides straight down and.
With a little push
and get your lock out. So this is the part you need in order to re-key that lock. Now you don't have a key, so you can't get in here to twist or turn. You can't get anything else. What you have to do is you've gotta take this top clip off of this lock. I use a little flathead. This is essential.
But you can use anything but I use these little flathead so you can knock this little clip off the top. Be careful when removing this. There are springs in here. You don't want 'em flying all over the place 'cause you can reuse them. So as you can see, I've got a bunch of springs across the top.
We can pull these out, we can reuse them. So pull 'em out somewhere and set 'em aside. All of your pins inside of here are now trash. Throw 'em away. Don't worry about trying to size them up to reuse them later. Just flip the sucker upside down, bang it a couple times, get all the pins out and make sure they're all empty.
There is a retaining clip on the back of this, which we're gonna pop out again. Here's your little flathead. You can see this guy right here. That's what we're removing.
So now we can re-key the lock starters. This part here gets you a re-keying kit. I have this one is a quick set. That guy comes with a lot of the tools that you need for this type of thing. But you will take this and you will slide it through the back and in, just like that. So now what we're gonna do is we're gonna start by putting our top pins back in the top of the cylinder.
So on my quick set little rekey thing here I've got a top pen you can see right there. So I'm going to put, 'cause this is a. Five pin key. So we're gonna put five top pins back in the top of this cylinder.
This is why it's very important not to mix up. Or not to try and keep these pens that you knocked out earlier. You don't need 'em. Throw 'em away. So I've got,
got five pens in. I'm going to put my springs back in.
Okay, so there's that. We're gonna take our clip that we knocked off earlier. This guy right here, set it on top and just push straight down. So you're click,
assuming you have it lined up right, which I do not. So
we're gonna try it again.
Just like that. Voila. So now that this is done, you have your springs and your top pins in place. We're gonna set this aside. I found a random set of good keys so I used my trustee. Quick set pin tool. I don't know. Alright. I'm gonna measure each one of these, each one of these little pins. So there's a six.
There's a six that appears to be a two, six and a six. So on my. Same, my same tool, my same key kit. Over here. I've got a bunch of bottom pins. So I need a 6, 6 2, 6, 6 in that order. They're all labeled. So here are two sixes. Six, six. I need a two,
two. We need two more sixes and we'll put those in.
So now I've got my key in. My pins are smooth and straight across the top. I'm going to, so you can see how they move as you're inserting a key. See that? So now what we're gonna do is we're gonna take our newly keyed cylinder and we're gonna push it. We're gonna push this piece right out. Whatever you do, when you get to this point, do not just pull the key out because all this will come right out with it.
So put your little locking clip back on the back so that the cylinder stays in place and now you can pull your key out. So we have now successfully rekeyed this now to get it back inside here. We can pull this guy out and we will just, I. Push this guy back in. It is now locked in place. So now I don't have my locking pin back in, but we're gonna, we're gonna do that now.
Same way you did before, this little pin on this side here. You can see how it's pushing these guys out of the way. We are going to push that over
and then we're gonna take our pin and insert it right back in. To the lock, pull it out.
So we have a locked, we.
So we're gonna take our key, put it in, and now we have an unlocked re-keyed lock and we start it off where we had no key for it. So that is how you re-key and keyed entry lock with no key.
